Our Story

Our Beginning 1951 to Present 2025

Walker Chapel AME Church was founded in February of 1951 under the leadership of the late Reverend J. L. N. Bell. The Church was organized at that time under the late Bishop Harrison J. Bryant. Charter members were Mr. R. C. Freeman, Mrs. Alma Ellis, Mrs. Jessie McDowell, Mr. & Mrs. James E. Green, Mr. & Mrs. John Rosebaugh (Magnolia), Mrs. Aretieree Holmes Baliton, Mr. & Mrs. Ernest Hubbard (Erma), Mr. & Mrs. Paul Nunn (Josephine) and Mr. & Mrs. Earl Woodson (Corrine).

For twenty-two months services were held in the Stadium Homes Management Building located at 2525 Hill Street. Later the property on which the church building stands was purchased, and in November of 1952, the first services were held at this location. Rev. Bell served as pastor from 1951 to 1956.

Reverend Lewis Scott became the pastor of Walker after Reverend Bell became ill. Reverend Scott served for only a short period of seven months. The vacancy was then filled by Rev. L. F. Greene until 1957, at which time Reverend J. C. Brooks was assigned as pastor for two years.

In 1959 Rev. Jewel Bryson DeWitty became Walker’s pastor and served for 16 years. With a membership of twenty, the indebtedness of $1,800 was liquidated. Church pews were purchased, and in 1964 the old Y.M.C.A. building was bought and moved to the 800 28th Avenue South site in Seattle, Washington. The membership grew from a total of twenty to one hundred twenty-two by 1972. Reverend DeWitty was promoted to Presiding Elder of the Puget Sound Conference after Presiding Elder L. F. Greene retired.

The Reverend Dr. Anna L. Jones(August 26, 2017 – Present) On August 26, 2017, at the 126th Session of the Pacific Northwest Annual Conference, The Reverend Dr. Anna L. Jones was appointed as the pastor of Walker Chapel AME Church. From the moment she arrived, she demonstrated her unwavering commitment to serving the Lord, bringing vision, innovation, and dynamic leadership to the congregation.

In her first eight months, Pastor Jones led the officers and members through a remarkable transition—relocating both the church from 800 28th Avenue South, Seattle, Washington, and parsonage, to a new worship space at 2400 East Valley Road, Renton, Washington, and securing a new parsonage in Kent, Washington. This monumental achievement was accomplished swiftly, and today, Walker Chapel stands debt-free.

While overseeing the renovation of the new community building into a house of worship, Pastor Jones remained steadfast in her pastoral duties, providing spiritual guidance and care. She revitalized key ministries, reintroducing weekly Prayer and Bible Study, a Youth Choir, a Praise Dance Team, and Love Feast. She also prioritized visiting the sick and shut-in, ensuring the congregation remained connected and cared for.

During the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Pastor Jones led Walker Chapel in community outreach and public health advocacy. Under her leadership, the church hosted Vaccination Events in April and May 2021, where 300 individuals received their first and second doses of the Pfizer vaccine. Additionally, she successfully secured a $25,000 grant from the Washington State Department of Health, supporting efforts to educate the community on the importance of vaccinations.

Beyond these accomplishments, Pastor Jones has established a thriving Food Ministry for every first and third Friday of the month and the Essential Item Ministry every third Friday at the church, continuing Walker Chapel’s mission of service, compassion, and faith in action. Through her leadership, the church remains a beacon of hope and transformation in the community.

What To Expect

The Mission of Walker Chapel:

The Mission of Walker Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church is to fulfill the mandate of Matthew 28:18-20. “And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

Salvation

Romans 10:9-10 If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.”

Discipleship

He said to them, Mark 16:15-18 “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”

Evangelism

We believe in Acts 1:8 “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you: and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Love

We believe in Matthew 22:37-40: “Jesus said to him, You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

Our Beliefs

THE BIBLE

We believe the Bible—consisting of sixty-six books—to be the inspired Word of God, without error. It reveals His will for the salvation of all humanity and is the final authority for Christian faith and life.

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.”2 Timothy 3:16

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”Psalm 119:105

GOD

We believe in one God, eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God has always been and will always be the only God; none came before Him, and none shall follow after Him.

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.”Deuteronomy 6:4

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”Matthew 28:19

THE FATHER

We believe the Father created all things in heaven and on earth. Out of His great love, He created human beings and desires a personal relationship with each of us.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”Genesis 1:1

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”1 John 3:1

JESUS CHRIST

We believe that Jesus Christ is both fully God and fully human, conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He lived a sinless life and died on the cross as the sacrifice for our sins, in accordance with the Scriptures. He rose bodily from the dead and ascended into heaven, where He reigns with power and glory.

“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.”John 1:14

“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.”Hebrews 4:15

“Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day.”1 Corinthians 15:3–4

THE HOLY SPIRIT

We believe the Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin, reveals the need for salvation through Jesus Christ, and draws people to God. He regenerates, indwells, guides, instructs, and empowers believers for holy living and faithful service.

“And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment.”John 16:8

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”John 14:26

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses…”Acts 1:8

HUMANITY

We believe humanity was created in the image of God and without sin. However, through disobedience, humanity fell and became subject to sin and judgment. On our own, we are unable to save ourselves. Yet, by God’s grace, through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we can receive forgiveness and eternal life.

“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”Genesis 1:27

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”Romans 3:23

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”Romans 6:23

SALVATION

We believe salvation is found in Jesus Christ alone. His sacrificial death provides the only means of justification and redemption for all who believe. Adding human works as a requirement for salvation undermines the sufficiency of Christ’s atonement. Salvation is the gift of God, received by faith.

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.”Ephesians 2:8–9

“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”Romans 5:1

“Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”Acts 4:12

ACCEPTING THE SINNER, DENOUNCING THE SIN

We believe no sin is too great for God to forgive. Therefore, as Christians, we are called to share the Gospel freely with all people, regardless of their past or present struggles. However, making Jesus Lord of our lives requires striving toward holiness and turning away from sin. While embracing and loving all people, Christians must not accept, excuse, or promote sin as permissible.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”1 John 1:9

“But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’”1 Peter 1:15–16

“Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”Romans 12:2
